ACE 2005 Gathering Winning Essay
Gabe Moreno, age 8
Christ the King School, grade 2
“What ACE Means to Me”
My scholarship meens that I can go to a school wher the teachers make me feel very loved and special. I have the smartest teachers who will make me smart. Going to Christ the King means that I will have a better educatn than a lot of children and I am very gratefull fo that. I love my school and my friends they are the best.
My scholarship was an answer to my seecret prayer to my Guardian angel to help me and my dad keep me at Christ the King. My dad said we were poor when he lost his job and got sick and I wud have to go to another school. So I said my prayers and the good people at Ace answered them. My dad said we have been very blessed and we owe them a lot so when I make my Bilion dollars I promise to give them sum.
Thank you Ace for making my special prayer come true.
Lisa Marie Solorio, age 12
Annunciation Catholic School, grade 7
“How ACE Helped Me, Help Myself”
My name is Lisa Marie Solorio. I’m twelve years old, and I’m in seventh grade at Annunciation Catholic School. The ACE scholarship helped me to attend a better school. Annunciation has made me feel more at home, but mainly it made me feel that my life is now stable.
I really haven’t had the best life, I’ve attended seven different schools and I wasn’t’ going to school every day. I was also passed back and for the between homes. I’m really beginning to have pride in myself. I joined the Peer Mediation Program at Annunciation and now I help other kids with their problems. Annunciation is really different than the other seven schools I’ve gone to. Annunciation has a tutoring program that I go to after School. I have never had tutoring before at the other schools I attended. The teachers at Annunciation explain the lessons to me so that I completely understand, even if it takes a long time. At my other school the teacher would help a little but did not explain as great as Annunciation teachers.
I also wouldn’t have been able to join any sports teams at my other school, because did not have sport teams. I play on the seventh grade girl’s basketball team and it has been a lot of fun. I’ve learned that winning is not that important. On my first day of school at Annunciation, I was rally scared to be the new kid, but different people asked me if I wanted to sit wit them at lunch and they wanted to show me around the school and help me get to class. The kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Mossman even called my house and asked if I would sit with her at breakfast the next day. I felt so special and wanted.
My report card has improved so much since I’ve been at Annunciation. One
thing that really amazed me was that I received the “student of the
Month Award” in September, the first month of school. I have
a lot of faith in myself to raise all my grades up to “A’s” and
I have almost made it.
Another reason I’m glad that I’m going to Annunciation is that
it’s a Catholic School and I go to church now. I’m learning
so much about religion and getting even closer to God.
I’m very thankful for the ACE program because they are so generous. It really is wonderful to give students scholarships for education. I hope to get a good education and maybe et another scholarship to college, get a good job and start a family. I hope to set a good example to younger students and to students who have the same problems that I did. It would be a blessing to see more and more kids off the streets and able to get a good education.
Thank you ACE scholarship committee for giving me the chance for a better life. I will always be grateful.
“Access to a quality education is not only a right that all children and youth should have, but it is an invaluable tool to fight poverty, create a safer city, and prepare a skilled local workforce.”
